Buying Chinese
In today’s Star Online, there was an article which highlighted people’s opinion on the purchases of Chinese food for the Chinese New Year.
It was mentioned that people are becoming very careful about the food which is known to come from China. During the CNY period, food like waxed delicacies, mandarin oranges, dried mushrooms, canned food, red dates and sweets used to be a big part of the food consumed during CNY. However, with the recent scare in the food quality from China, it was reported that there was a 25% to 30% drop in CNY foodstuff imported from China this year compared with last year – and this is on top of the already lower quantity from last year.
Even mandarin oranges seem to be a lot lesser this year. Usually business will be brisk seeing that mandarin oranges are seen to be auspicious and people will be buying in boxes to welcome the new year. This year, I have also reduced my purchase, for fear of eating “poison” from China. I know that we should no label everything from China as bad, but then again, better to be safe than sorry right?
I am also wondering how this will impact on China’s export. Will it really hamper its economy? How long will people be weary of China’s food stuff seeing that a lot of our consumption comes from there? Are we really going to change our food preference simply because some food from China had gone bad?
What do you think?
